Hello everyone! Welcome to my blog. As a writer I’m always revising my work. Each time trying to make it better. I’m posting a revised version of my poem ‘Best Friend’. I hope you like it.
Accompanying my poem are beautiful illustrations by a very talented artist from Denmark Zindy Nielsen. I believe the art compliments my poem. I hope you do too.

Best Friend

The sun shone brightly on the day we met.
The radiance of your smile promised eternal sunshine.
When darkness loomed I dried the sorrows you wept.
Always by your side, I offered dawn when you suffered stress.
I was gravity, ever-present for each trivial affair of your life.
But when I needed you most, you couldn’t care less.

As I neared my goals, and success was within my reach.
The luster of friendship began to dull in your eyes.
Why do you despise me? Tormented, in my mind I screeched.
You feigned to listen, when all the while
you gathered information to judge me with.
Why the hatred, my friend? Why am I on trial?

When you betrayed me, the skies grew gray and dark.
My heart bled within me as the storm clouds gathered in your eyes.
You held up a broken mirror to show me my heart.
Sodden by the tempest of envy, unable to tolerate my radiant soul.
You set out to drain my spirit with distorted images you presented.
Until one day, in another’s eyes, my heart’s true reflection I stole.

Eerie, cold, and turbulent was the night our friendship ended.
I was too fetching, too clever, too creative for you to love me.
How am I to release my disappointment? Will my heart ever be mended?
Your spiteful squalls tore a hole in my heart, but my spirit you did miss.
Some friends crush you with a cold glare or a hurtful word.
A jealous friend betrays you with a cowardly kiss.

Very good and so very honest..Friends should (but rarely do) be with us forever.I guess they stay with us in our hearts and remembering.

Unfortunately, this happens in some friendships. One person gives while the other takes. When the giving friend is in need of consolation, the other person suddenly doesn’t have time for the friendship. Or sometimes envy splits the friendship in two. This is a lovely poem and the accompanying illustrations are perfect. Thank you for sharing this.

This is so sad but beautiful, and unfortunately true. I have had a friend kind of like that, there for only themselves. The whole “better to have loved and lost” is true for friendship, too, but that’s little comfort. It’s great that you could take your pain and turn into something beautiful for the world to read, enjoy and relate to. That is a gift from the universe, the universe thanks you for sharing your gift!

This hit home for me, as I’ve had experience with this in the past. One of them is a co-worker and she seeks to make my life miserable. It hurts so bad because we were friends, and it’s the betrayal that sucks.
This was well written and perfectly captured those feelings. It’s also a great reminder why my husband will always be my best friend. 🙂

Oh Lisa, I’m so sorry. It’s bad enough when a friend betrays you, but for her to be a co-worker too. That’s terrible! It’s like you can’t get away from the nightmare. Thank you very much. I’m glad you enjoyed the post, and I hope things get better for you at work.

It is what it is, and it definitely sucks, but I try to ignore it, do my job and then get out of there. Fortunately, I can work from home quite a bit so I’m not there very often. I also have an amazing husband, which reminds me things aren’t so bad if I can’ come home to him!

It’s very true Vashti, friends should encourage us and makes us happy, some do but unfortunately some don’t and that hurts when you realize they are not your friends anymore and probably never were your friends. Beautiful poem Vashti and beautiful illustrations too from Nielsen

Beautiful piece. Beautiful art. I had a special friend for years. But we parted ways nearly twenty years ago. At first it was hard. We’d shared so much. It felt like something was missing. But now, I realize it was not a healthy relationship. More one-sided. I don’t miss her anymore. I hope you heal. I’m sure this is part of that healing process.

It’s so hard to know when you first become friends with someone, what might be their break points. Sometimes you will have invested years in a friendship, only to be betrayed and devastated. A friend breakup can be almost as hard as a romantic one.

I need to write something about friendship. This was so timely for me! Even though my last post was about losing a friend (I didn’t see THAT one coming!!! And it caught me so off guard) I was preparing to write something similar about a friendship going astray. There are so many different aspects in friendships and the joy and pain it brings; I’ve kind of landed in your poem and it is sad and comforting all in the same flight knowing someone else understands that place!
