Work-In-Progress Blog Challenge

Hi, everyone! I was asked by author Bianca Sloane to participate in the ‘Work-In-Progress Blog Challenge,’ and I accepted. Bianca Sloane writes suspense novels about the dark side of love. I am currently reading her novel, ‘Sweet Little Lies’ and so far, I find it riveting.

Bianca’s second novel, ‘Live and Let Die,’ was chosen as ‘Thriller of the Month’ (May 2013) by

When Bianca Sloane is not writing, she’s watching Bravo TV, Investigation Discovery, reading or cooking. You can find out more about this talented author on her website and blog.

For this challenge, I must post the first line from each of the first three chapters in my work-in-process (WIP). Then I must select four other writers to do the same.

I have several WIP, but I’ve chosen ‘The Fall of Lilith’ for this challenge. ‘The Fall of Lilith’ is a Dark Fantasy aimed at a young adult/adult audience. This novel is divided into two parts: BOOK I – Heaven, and BOOK II – Earth. Therefore, I will be posting the first line of the first three chapters of both parts. Now, this is indeed a challenge. Revealing a tiny fragment of one’s work is a scary thing for any writer to do, since the entire work might be judged on those few lines.

(BOOK I – Heaven)

Chapter 1

The War in Heaven raged on around Lilith, the cacophony of screams, howls, and wails threatening to make her mad.

Chapter 2

In The Beginning

Before He created the universe, God was present.

Chapter 3

Developing Attractions

The angels in Heaven were as numerous as the stars, all with distinguishing characteristics and potentials.

(Book II – Earth)

Chapter 27

Lilith’s Fate

Lilith fell to Earth, crashing through trees, feeling the collision with every branch she broke along the way.

Chapter 28

Gadreel’s Brutal Encounters

Gadreel tumbled from Heaven, bawling all the while. As she fell, she trembled with fear and regret, but still she could not stop thinking about Samael.

Chapter 29

The Angry Mountain

For many miles, over many long days and short nights, stopping only for rest, Lilith and Gadreel followed the penetrating, shrill sound through the grassland.

 The Fall of Lilith

Now for the four writers I have challenged:

Teagan Kearney

Dyane Forde

Zenobia (Zee) Southcombe

Glendon Perkins

For more about these writers click on their names. I can’t wait to read about what these writers are working on!

Very interesting challenge. You’re stories are always good and I get a sense of where this is going. I love the photos you come up with to depict each event. That’s very creative.

Hi Sunni! Yes, it is an interesting challenge. It’s my first time participating in this kind of challenge. I’m happy you liked the pictures! Thank you! 😀 xx

You’ve just showed that social media is definitely worth persevering with despite obstacles. I’ve struggled with keeping contact with fellow writers online over the past few weeks, and am just starting to get my breath again – and came to check out my good friend Vashti’s new blog post, and now I’m so excited! I’d love to accept the challenge. Thank you!
I love the concept of ‘Lilith’ and your opening sentences give just enough to introduce the characters and action which I’m sure will tempt readers. Lilith and Gadreel sound like fascinating characters. Good luck with the writing! :))

That’s wonderful to read, Teag! Thank you so much for your enthusiasm. I’m happy you enjoyed the sentences. I can’t wait to read your lines. Be sure to tag me with the post! 😀

Yay! I’m so happy you’re excited! It’s going to be fun to read what you have. 😀 Thank you!

oo looks like something I could benefit from reading, Vashti! I don’t know why but I have always been interested in fallen angels etc, and even religion, even though I’m not religious! Intrigued….

    • Vashti Quiroz-Vega August 29, 2014 at 10:47 am #

Awesome! I’m so happy you’re intrigued by my book! We have a lot in common. I’m not religious, but I was raised in religion, and since I was very young I’ve been curious about angels––the fallen and the holy. There are so many unanswered questions. So I wrote my own story, and it turns out it is unlike anything I’ve ever read before. So I’m really proud of this one. Thank you! 😀

What an awesome challenge. I should do this. I have 3 WIP’s that I have not touched in a year 😦

    • Vashti Quiroz-Vega August 31, 2014 at 8:29 pm #

Hi Christen! Yes, it’s a great challenge, and you should do it. Try to focus on one of your WIPs! You reminded me of a quote by Philip Roth “The road to hell is paved with works-in-progress.” 😉

Intriguing stuff Vashti… already there’s a distinctly different feel between the two books in so few lines. The second definitely comes across as darker. Nicely done. Looking forward to reading more!

    • Vashti Quiroz-Vega September 5, 2014 at 7:58 am #

Hi Jon! Oh yes, there’s definitely a big difference. The Basement was a book I felt I needed to write, but The Fall of Lilith is more of what I love to write. I love big, epic stories, dark fantasy, and horror. I believe I combine these well in my Fantasy Angels Series. Thank you very much! I will be posting an excerpt soon. 😀

Lilith fell to Earth, crashing through trees, feeling the collision with every branch she broke along the way.

Lilith plummeted down through the ancient trees, the branches whipping and penetrating her flesh, so that as she crashed screaming to Earth her own blood fell like a gentle rain about her torn flesh.

(Just playing with the image. How are the books coming along?)

    • Vashti Quiroz-Vega October 31, 2014 at 11:14 am #
