Hello, my name is Vashti and I’m a writer of horror, fantasy, and suspense/thriller. It’s no secret, to those who know me, that I’m a huge fan of author Stephen King. I’ve read most of his books, including the non-horror ones. It is always a bit scary for an avid reader, such as myself, to go watch a movie adaptation of a book I’ve loved reading. Too many times things go horribly wrong. Like when a director or screenwriter change too much of the storyline and mix in a great deal of ‘hollywood’. Like they’re going to tell a better story then Stephen King, really? The directors and screenwriters that have remained within Stephen King’s storyline have gotten it right. Don’t mess with a good thing people.
Anyway, I get goosebumps and chills up and down my spine when I’m asked who Stephen King is. I take a few steps back and imagine a green gooey alien behind his/her skin mask. You’d have to be from another planet not to have heard of Stephen King. He is the bestselling author on the planet and a very wise man. Today, I’m going to list some of my favorite Stephen King books, movie adaptations, and quotes. If you’re not familiar with who Stephen King is you will by the end of this post and maybe you’ve been a fan of his all along and didn’t even know it. 😉

I think overall he´s been quite lucky with adaptations to screen compared to others. I´d have a hard time thinking which one I like the most…Although Misery is one of my favourites, I imagine partly because of the writer character…HIs book ‘On Writing’ too, although I haven’t managed to catch up some of his most recent ones…Long live Stephen King! Eyes of the Dragon. The first book I ever read and my all time favorite next to the Gunslinger series. I actually have a personalized autographed copy of Four Past Midnight. My mother negotiated it after he gave a talk at Georgetown. He is my ALL TIME fave author.

Hi Christie! Oh my God! How could I have forgotten The Eyes of the Dragon? I loved that book and read it three times as a teen! This novel was a deviation from the norm for Stephen King, who normally writes horror. The Eyes of the Dragon is a classic fantasy. I loved it and I’m still waiting for the movie. 😉 Have a great New Year’s Eve and New Year! 😀

Are you kidding? I love Stephen King. I spent my teen years and early adulthood reading his books. I think the Stand is my favorite book and the Shining is my favorite King movie. I would very much like to read his book on writing. My daughter read it and enjoyed it very much.

Hi Darlene! Stephen King’s book ‘On Writing’ is a great learning tool. He also talks a lot about himself in the book which makes it even more interesting. I highly recommend it. The Stand and The Shining are both awesome books. Unfortunately, the TV miniseries for The Stand did not do the book justice. Hopefully someone else will give it another try. However, The Shining (movie) was an excellent Thriller/Psychological horror. Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall were great in it. 😀 Have a happy New Year’s Eve and New Year!

I love Stephen King, I agree this person must be a green gooey alien, to not know the great Stephen King. I was recently asked to list five of my all time favorite books, and Stephen King’s Am Writing, was listed on it’s on as my writing bible 🙂 Your lists are awesome!

Ha, ha! We both have a crush on him. I met him once in college and he was the sweetest man. Those are amazing movies, great adaptations and great acting. I never get tired of watching them. The books were just as awesome. 😀

Stephen King is one of my favorite writers, and I have to agree with your list vashti, especially Misery and The Green Mile, which is probably my second favorite movie (Shawshank Redemption is the first).
The Shining ranks up there too. When you think about it, I have a feeling what contributed greatly to the movies being so awesome was the casting. Bates in Misery, Nicholson in Shining, Hanks in Green Mile…seriously, could it get any better?

You’re right Doreen. Casting did have a great deal to do with it. I loved Tom Hanks and Michael Clarke Duncan in The Green Mile, Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman were amazing together in The Shawshank Redemption, Kathy Bates was an incredible Anni Wilkes and James Caan played a great Paul Sheldon too in Misery. When the actors get the characters and play them well that’s part of what makes the movie unforgettable. 😀 Have a great New Year’s Eve and New Year! 🙂 xx

I’m a huge fan of Stephen King too. My favorite book is The Stand and I’m really excited about the two movies they’re going to make based on it. I heard Matthew McConaughey is going to play Randall Flagg.

Vashti, my favorite Stephen King book is On Writing, and I remember really enjoying reading Christine many years ago. Tons of movies, but Shawshank Redemption, The Stand, and The Secret Window are some I liked a lot. 🙂 Flat out terrifying: Cujo (book), Pet Sematary (movie). Another big fan and agree with the movie list. I guess some of the mini series ones just kind of fell flat. They seemed to have struggled with the job of bringing something brilliant to life. Sadly, some almost came across like being a SciFi production.
But Misery, The Green Mile, Stand by Me, and some of the others were winners.
