How many times have you been tempted to scrap the writing you began because you thought it wasn’t working out, but you stuck with it and it blossomed into a fascinating story? It’s happened to me several times. I almost gave up on my book, The Fall of Lilith on several occasions. At times I felt I was in over my head, but giving up would have been a mistake. Now, I consider The Fall of Lilith to be one of my best work to date. If you give up on a story every time things start to get complicated you’ll never finish a single one. If you get stuck, stop writing and go for a walk, eat something, bake, exercise, read . . . take a break from your writing for a while, and when you return to it you’ll see things from a different perspective.

Oh wow Vashti, two great quotes. Albert Einstein said, “Never give up on what you really want to do. The person with big dreams is more powerful than one with all the facts.” I think there’s something to this.

I’m a big Einstein quote fan. Did you know he is suspected to have had Asperger’s syndrome? My son has AS.

Very interesting, Staci, I didn’t know that. I don’t know a lot about the disease only that it’s related to autism. The kids are very intelligent, they can speak normally but have trouble with non-verbal communication. If I’m wrong please correct me. When and how was your child diagnosed? Did you notice something different about him?

Asperger’s is on the autism spectrum, which of course is a very large spectrum. My son has some difficulty with verbally communicating and focus/concentration. We actually thought he had ADHD, but his extreme obsessions and pro-longed focus on these interests discredit that idea. He was diagnosed soon after he turned 6. He also has hyper-sensitive hearing, but interestingly enough is very affectionate. Asperger’s is also considered high-functioning autism. Often-times people don’t even know or can’t tell he’s autistic. At any rate, we had to pull him out of school and do homeschooling with him because he hated school and couldn’t focus. He’s much better now.

You are so right. It’s so easy to give up. But you need to follow through on your idea. If you don’t, you’ll never complete any project! 😁

That’s my point exactly. Many writers hit a brick wall and instead of bulldozing past it they cry ‘Writer’s Block!’. Sometimes all you need to do is walk away and come back later. 😉

Sometimes we have far too many projects going on but choosing the right one and sticking by it must be the way… Although sometimes we start something and it isn’t the right time for it. Who knows?

Yes, I agree. There’s been times that I’ve been working on too many things at once. The best way to do it is to pick one project, focus on that project, finish it and then move on to the next.

I like this Neil Gaiman quote – so very true. And yes, taking a break can mean a world of difference when you can look at your work with fresh eyes. You should never give up.

Hi Zee! Yes, I agree. I think 1st drafts are seldom less than terrible in some way but with some honest (out loud) reading and self editing you can do wonders. After you’ve done all you feel you can do, hand it over to some good beta readers and then finally to a professional editor. You can’t bypass those steps––not if you want something truly good. 😉

Those are two marvelous quotes. (Why do i feel surprised when Stephen King says such wise things… He’s so successful, i should not be surprised. I guess it’s just the “horror” thing.

Hi Teagan! Oh, so you think horror writers are dumb? Hmmm. Good to know . . . JUST KIDDING! Ha, ha! I find horror and fantasy very difficult to write. It takes a great deal of creativity and imagination to come up with a good story, not to mention the research involved. Stephen King is very intelligent and a genius storyteller, that’s why he’s so successful. Wow! Love that proverb. You have a great Thursday and weekend! 😀

Yes the first one kind of resonated with me, I tend to get easily distracted start one piece of writing, and then get side tracked and begin another, so have to learn to be faithful to the task in hand. The Neil Gaiman quote is real cute, never forget to keep a playful side and be yourself.
