The prompt words this week made me think of the movie Black Swan. Natalie Portman did a phenomenal job portraying a ballerina slowly losing her mind. If you enjoy psychological thriller-horror movies and a stellar cast, I highly recommend this movie.

Have you seen the movie, Black Swan? Did you enjoy Natalie’s performance?

Do you know anyone who suffers from schizophrenia?

I’m a psychiatrist so the answer is… many and have worked with them for years. I’ve watched Black Swan. I “enjoyed” the movie although… Have a lovely weekend.

Hello Olga. Yes, I imagined you must have been involved in the treatment of many schizophrenics. I suppose there are different degrees or types of schizophrenia? I say this because I had a distant relative that had the disease (he’s gone) and he was a very sweet, friendly, and talented person. He was an excellent artist. I actually have one of his paintings. He was a bit eccentric but in a fun way and that’s about it.
I loved the movie although there were some heart-wrenching moments. It was very well acted. 😀 xx

Yes, I have worked with many schizophrenics in my career as a psychotherapist. There are some of my favorite people and I never met one like the Portman character. Love your Haiku~

Hi Cindy! I didn’t know you were a psychotherapist. I was just telling my friend Olga who’s a psychiatrist that I had a relative who was diagnosed as a schizophrenic but he was not scary at all. He was actually quite friendly, fun, and a talented artist. But I’m sure there are schizophrenics that are dangerous, aren’t there? Maybe they have more than one issue? Like a schizophrenic with a psychopathic personality?

I do too. Well, I did, since he’s gone now. He wasn’t like the character portrayed by Natalie Portman though. He was actually quite nice. I enjoyed spending time with him. He was a talented artist and a lot of fun to be around. 🙂

Your Haiku spoke to me. Yes, I have known a schizophrenic, too close. I love “The Black Swan.” Natalie Portman is one of my top favorite actress. Aside from writing poetry & fiction, I am a film reviewer. Recently, I have been trying to decide if I want to write a review for the online publication I work with. It is a film that disturbs me but draws me in. Psychology is a subject I have followed since I was a teenager. I am Bipolar & the DSM5 have many diagnoses I am familiar with. I hate stigmas. I reject them & feel those who denigrate anyone for having something happening differently in their brain, are ill-educated or just do not think at all. Plus, the news berates those with a mind that is original.

I think you should write about your experiences. It helps expressing what has happened to you and what is happening in your life. Understanding comes with opening up inside. Writing can be cathartic. I make my way through using words on the page. You have the talent. I hope you do write about your experience(s). jk ❤

I’m so glad my haiku spoke to you. Natalie Portman is a great actress and one of my favorites too. (Ignorance + Fear = Stigmas) Illnesses of the mind are not well understood by most people and when people don’t understand something they tend to fear it.
The only experience I have with schizophrenia is my relationship with a relative who was diagnosed with schizophrenia. He was an amazing man. He was a talented artist and a lot of fun to be around. I remember him fondly.
I’m glad you find peace in writing. I do too. 😀 xx

I wonder if those not in the know feel people with an illness of the mind is somehow a Monster in their minds. We aren’t, as a rule, dangerous, esp. to others. To ourselves, that may have different rules.

My brother is. He was diagnosed when a teenager. Added to schizophrenia is bipolar. We were close once until his illness turned me into his Judas. Went very badly after that.

Writing, reading, films, & TV are my escapes. I plan on extending my film making into the out of doors. An adventure I hope will be good for my overall health.

Yeah! to Natalie Portman. I do believe I have seen everyone of her great films. Such a fan of V for Vendetta & from her first “Professionals” on up I have been amazed by her acting abilities. She is amazing.

Have you checked the two new Haiku words yet? I am almost about ready to take a look see. I wonder what Ronovan has placed in the path of the Muse.

Have a Great day! jk 🙂 xox

Only ignorant people think like that. Most people know there are different degrees to mental illness and there are also medications that keep symptoms at bay.
I’m sorry about what happened between you and your brother. I hope you guys can work it out.
Nature and outdoor activities are very soothing to the mind and body. Go for it!
I haven’t checked out the new prompt words yet but I will soon. I usually post my haiku on Fridays.
You have a great day too. 😀 xx

Just finished setting up Haiku post & scheduled it to post in the AM on Tuesday the 14th July. We had a kittie named Eliot, she was born on Bastille Day. She lived to be 21yrs.

Wait til you see the words. No Spoilers. Let you discover them yourself.

No hope with that side of the family. I do have a brother I write to regularly. He has a daughter with two grandsons. I love my niece and great nephews. They are quite young. One not talking yet.

That is enough blood family for me.

As for the people who do not understand, I will always tell the truth about who I am. No bully will rule my openness, no matter what I am being honest about, it is important not to hide. I did enough of that as a kid.

I think I started a new ritual. On Sunday, I go to everyone’s blogs and read what they have written. I like if I like & make a comment if I have it in me & feel it.

It felt good to do that this past Sunday.

Well, I’ve got a few more things to do before sleep. Hope you have a Great night and a Great Tuesday. jk xox 🙂

Hello! Natalie plays a character with an extreme case of the illness, I believe. I had a relative with the disease and I didn’t even know he suffered from schizophrenia until after his death. He was an intelligent, fun, out-going, and talented man. I loved him very much. I guess there’s a stigma with any disease, especially diseases of the mind which are so poorly understood. If you enjoy psychological thriller/horror I recommend you see the movie. 🙂

Yes, diseases of the mind are so poorly understood. I must see the movie at some point. Sorry to hear about your much loved relative passing away. Sadly often it is only after someone dies that we find out these hidden and more painful aspects about their life, but sounds like he had many wonderful qualities Vashti.

He passed away years ago but thank you for the sentiment. He was a great man despite his illness. His immediate family chose to hide the fact that he had schizophrenia from the rest of the family which I think is sad, because it was like hiding part of who he was. Nevertheless, the family loved him and enjoyed his presence. I have one of his paintings on my wall. He was a very talented artist.
Yes! See the movie and let me know how you liked it. 😉 xx

Artistic people are more prone to mental illness, it’s sad but often true. Yes, it’s such a shame that his family hid his illness. Mental illness still seems to have such a stigma attached. More needs to be done to change this, methinks….

I truly loved this one. Powerful Vashti. I have seen Black Swan, an amazing film so well directed and performed. Schizophrenia is s debilitating disease for the victim and the people around them. Thankfully nowadays it can in most instances be controlled with medication.

Hello Yolanda! I’m glad you liked the haiku. Yes, nowadays there are great medication to treat schizophrenics and most can live a normal life. I saw on Twitter that you wrote a short story on your blog. I saved it and will read it soon. I can’t wait actually. I’m very intrigued. 😉

Shockingly, I have not watched the Black Swan. I usually wait for more “grown up” movies to come out on Redbox or Netflix, but then I forget about them 😦 So, thank you for the reminder!
