Writer’s Quote Wednesday – Read, Read, Read

26 Aug

Today is Writer’s Quote Wednesday hosted by Colleen  from Silver Threading.

I’d like to encourage everyone today to pick up a book (or tablet) and read. I hear too many people say, way too often that they don’t have time to read. I know doctors, nurses, parents with multiple children, teachers, lawyers . . . who are avid readers. If they can make the time to read anyone can. And if you’re an aspiring writer, it is part of your job to read. Whenever I hear an aspiring writer say they don’t read, for whatever reason, the hairs at the back of my neck stand on end. Writers have to read––if they want to be any good.

I had a conversation with someone who wanted to be a writer who said she didn’t have time to read. It’s like an aspiring chef saying she doesn’t have time to eat…

    Those are great quotes.

Hi Sonya! That’s exactly right! You can always make time to read, even if it’s only a couple of pages a day. Thank you! 😀

Whoa! Great quotes Vashti. That’s crazy that there are writers that don’t read. Doesn’t really make much sense, does it?
Hope you’re having a good week.

Thank you Staci! No, it doesn’t make sense for a writer not to read. And that old excuse, ‘I don’t have time’, is lame. I am having a good week. I hope you are too. 😀 xx

A colourful bouquet of quotes here, vashti, to which I may add Milton’s, “A good book is the precious life-blood of a master spirit, embalmed and treasured up for a life beyond life”. I am surprised to hear that there are writers who do not read; obviously they cannot be worth a look-in, and can at best qualify as hacks…best wishes.. Raj.

Hello Raj! Thank you and I loved the quote you added––beautiful. You’re right, a writer that doesn’t read cannot be very good.

Vashti, I once met one of my heroes, Zig Ziglar. Have you heard of him? I asked him what I would have to do to become a motivational speaker. His first answer was – become an avid reader.

Hi Dave! It makes sense. Reading gives you words, ideas . . . to express yourself. I’m not familiar with Zig Ziglar. Who is he?

He was a famous motivational speaker in the past two decades and author of many bestsellers on success – also a very wealthy CEO, I think – but he recently passed away. Very wise man whose speeches typically inspired salespeople. Anyway, he told me that although his life was very busy, he read an average of three hours a day.

So true – writers must read and read and read and never stop reading. I love the kiss in the dark by a stranger quote.

I love that quote too. Stephen King’s the man! Ha, ha! It makes perfect sense that reading many different books can give you the tools to write. 🙂

Great quotes. I always seem to spend a lot of time reading, even when I think I don’t have time. Writing is the same way for me. 🙂

Absolutely agree with this 100% Vashti, you have to read before you can write, a bit like you have to crawl before you have a hope of walking!
