Writer’s Quote Wednesday – I Like Nonsense . . .

10 Feb

Hello everyone! It’s Writer’s Quote Wednesday! Last week I told you I was a huge fan of Horror and of course I am but I am also a big fan of Fantasy. This week I will feature several quotes from some of the brilliant minds of Fantasy fiction. I hope you enjoy.

“I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living, It’s a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope. Which is what I do, And that enables you to laugh at life’s realities.”

~ Dr. Seuss

“Fantasy is escapist, and that is its glory. If a soldier is imprisioned by the enemy, don’t we consider it his duty to escape?. . .If we value the freedom of mind and soul, if we’re partisans of liberty, then it’s our plain duty to escape, and to take as many people with us as we can!”

~ J.R.R. Tolkien

“Stories of imagination tend to upset those without one.”

~ Terry Pratchett

“Humans need fantasy to be human. To be the place where the falling angel meets the rising ape.”

~ Terry Pratchett, Hogfather

“The best fantasy is written in the language of dreams. It is alive as dreams are alive, more real than real … for a moment at least … that long magic moment before we wake.

We read fantasy to find the colors again, I think. To taste strong spices and hear the songs the sirens sang. There is something old and true in fantasy that speaks to something deep within us, to the child who dreamt that one day he would hunt the forests of the night, and feast beneath the hollow hills, and find a love to last forever somewhere south of Oz and north of Shangri-La.

They can keep their heaven. When I die, I’d sooner go to middle Earth.”

~ George R.R. Martin

Wonderful quotes again this week, Vashti. I was surprised, for some reason, when I read the first one was by Dr. Seuss (though it’s probably my favorite). After thinking about it, his statement makes sense in his writings, which is never thought of from that perspective.

    Have a blessed week 🙂

He certainly has a unique and quirky way of telling a story. He was a brilliant man and you’d be surprised how many great quotes there are by him.
Thank you, Greg! You have a great week too. 😀

Wonderful total package with this post, Vashti. I was impressed with the Dr. Seuss quote also, but George R. R. Martin’s words struck me; “We read fantasy to find the colors again…” I’m not a fantasy writer, but I have written a few short stories and I found that Dave Butler’s advice was perfect.

Hi Olga! These writers are so different from each other but they are both geniuses in the fantasy genre and they sure have a way with words. Yes, Dave was on point! I’m so happy you enjoyed the post. 😀

I started out writing fantasy before moving onto mystery but I do still write some fantasy today. You could definitely say my dreams take place in the fantasy realm. My husband tells me daily I’m not grounded at all and live in a fantasy world. So be it then. I can always see the magic and beauty in things, even the day isn’t going well. I hope that never changes.

Enjoyed your post and the nice quotes. Have a great week!

I love the quotes you’ve chosen Vashti! The Pratchett quote has me thinking- is that why I have avoided fantasy? And is it the reason I struggle with incorporating the ‘magic’ into the magic realism I’m trying to write in my novel? Hmmm…

I’m glad you enjoyed the quotes. Which of the Pratchett quotes are you referring to? It’s always good to reflect on your work. I’m curious to know more of what you’re referring to though.🤔

Mek, I know you’re not saying that you don’t have an imagination because I know that you do. You just have to find what works best for you and then your imagination and creativity will come alive. 🙂

Yet another great collection of quotes highlighting a genre…one I am most familiar with from my childhood..but have dabbled in later years. My favourites are the ideas of waking up brain cells, looking through the wrong end of a telescope, and our duty to escape 🙂

Dr. Seuss was a brilliant man and I love many of his quotes. Some people are surprised when they read one of his quotes. I love the idea of Fantasy being escapist. I escape when I read fantasy and when I write fantasy I’m free.
I’m so glad you enjoyed the quotes. Thank you!😘

All very good comments, and true in their point. To be human is to dream about what doesn’t exist, and in some cases, make it exist.

If Dr Seus and Terry Pratchet can climb into bed together… (sit on the same page giving advice), then the world can’t be all bad. Whimsy/fantasy they are escapism, as is writing of all genres. Love your smorgasbord of quotes and video’s thank you
