Writers Quote Wednesday – CHANGE

Hi everyone! Welcome to Writers Quote Wednesday! I’m a perfectionist by nature but I also have a slight fear of change. Two things that do not go well together like rice with mangoes. Since it has been engrained in my mind from the time I was a child to always do my best and never do anything half-assed, I’ve had to put my fears of change aside many times.

Just a short while ago I wrote about the changes I need to make to my book, The Fall of Lilith. Talk about scary . . . I was tempted to leave it alone. After all, I did have seven beta readers tell me it was pretty good. The editor that told me about restructuring certain scenes also told me that if I left the book as it was it would probably do well but it wouldn’t be a great book. Hmm. I thought maybe I could live with that. Unfortunately (or fortunately) I kept hearing the voices of certain family members in my head, ‘That would be the equivalent of leaving something half-assed.’ That’s when I decided to go ahead and tackle those changes. It’s scary––it isn’t going to be easy, and it’s going to take some time, but I have to do what’s best for my book. That part of me that always wants to do my best––I don’t want to change. Nothing gets better by chance, it gets better by change.

    Now you’ll have me thinking about rice and mangoes. I bet there must be dish somewhere…. Good luck with the changes. You’re right, we don’t know how they’ll work out but it’s true we can’t stay still… And of course, changes might bring us so much more…

      Ha, ha! I don’t recommend it. I had a friend and whenever she thought something was a mess she would say, ‘Un arroz con mango.’ I always thought it was so funny. I can’t see those two together but, like you said I wouldn’t doubt that there exist some recipe out there that would put those two together. That’s what I’m counting on––that change will bring great things. Thank you, my friend! 🙂 ❤

    You’ve got me thinking now (but not about rice & mangoes). 🙂 I’m a bit of a perfectionist but also don’t like change all that much. Hmm… Great quotes.

    For about eight years, we would stop at a Thai restaurant on our way to the cabin. There was always sticky rice and mango on the dessert menu, but strangely even though we almost always asked for it, we only got it once or twice. They always said ‘not in season’. lol Mangoes are ALWAYS available, BUT, only certain mangos are used for this dish, which is quite delicious!

    Good for you for holding yourself to a high standard Vashti. You won’t regret it.

    I agree with Olga… Change brings us so much more. I went through similar with my book too, Vashti. I am sure there will be much that I will “change” in it.         I agree with you on this. However, there was always something bothering me about my story. I felt something was missing but I wasn’t sure what. This editor hit the nail on the head. The moment she said it I knew she was right. I had actually thought about it once or twice but didn’t want to admit it, because I knew it meant a lot of work and restructuring. Now that someone that I follow, trust, and admire pointed it out, I have to face the truth and get to work.

      Thank you Marje! I have an account on Google+ and there are many writing communities. There are plenty of avid readers on G+ and especially in these communities. Also, if you know any editors, English teachers, book bloggers/reviewers they may be willing to beta read your book.

    A courageous step Vashti… It’s so appealing to be ‘finished’ and hard to go back to the drawing board. I was worried at first that you were relying too much on one opinion but was glad to read that the advice matched a feeling that you had. Good Luck!
