At the risk of sounding cliché I will say that beauty is indeed in the eyes of the beholder. To a mom her baby is the most beautiful creature alive, to a stranger the same infant may look like Winston Churchill or Mr. Magoo. A man may walk into a bar with his girlfriend who he immediately determines is the most beautiful woman in the place but to the others there she may not even be close to that. A man may spend a great deal of money on a work of art he finds exquisite, meanwhile his friends could be wondering what possessed him to buy such a hideous painting. By now you get the point––I hope.

I also believe that our perception of beauty can change. I once had a crush on a football player in college. I thought he was the hottest thing since Johnny Depp (in early 2000s). After a couple of dates and finding out what a jerk he was I took another look at him and he didn’t seem as good looking anymore, as a matter of fact I couldn’t understand what I saw in him in the first place. The opposite also happened to me. A man that I didn’t find very attractive, not that I thought he was ugly, but I just thought he wasn’t my type, kept pursuing me. He was so sweet and kind that before long I began to see him differently. One day I looked at him and he seemed very attractive. He had won me over with his kind nature and suddenly I saw him through different eyes. I believe personality has a lot to do with how people perceive you.

I also believe that if you look hard enough there’s beauty in all things.

“The beauty of a woman is not in a facial mode but the true beauty in a woman is reflected in her soul. It is the caring that she lovingly gives the passion that she shows. The beauty of a woman grows with the passing years.”

~Audrey Hepburn

“Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it.”

~Confucius

“Life is full of beauty. Notice it. Notice the bumble bee, the small child, and the smiling faces. Smell the rain, and feel the wind. Live your life to the fullest potential, and fight for your dreams.”

~Ashley Smith

“Beauty, whether moral or natural, is felt, more properly than perceived.”

~David Hume

“It took a long while for me to know that I’m beautiful. I remember going through this phase when I was younger of wanting to pass by mirrors and not look at them. That was so ridiculous. I’ve learned now that beauty starts from within.”

~Kelly Rowland

Have a beautiful day, everyone!

You’re right. And it doesn’t apply only to people. Objects, clothes, landscapes, art, some people might see beauty in animals, places, colours, shapes that others don’t see. It is arbitrary but we can learn to appreciate it.

Vashti, I loved your quotes about beauty. Isn’t it funny that people can’t see the beauty that lurks beneath the surface? I think you explained that perfectly! ❤

Yep. Had the same dating experiences. The guys who are “in demand” don’t pass inspection and the ones we think we should discard grow on us over time. You gave great examples.

I think it’s because the ones “in demand” rely on their looks and don’t develop their personalities which to me is much more important. It’s funny how things work out sometimes. Thank you!

    Hi Vashti😍
Love that Audrey Hepburn quote! Beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder and I would take personality and respect over looks as looks can fade. If you meet a stunningly good looking person and if they turn out to be awful my respect for them goes and I view them as unattractive as I don’t believe anyone is Ugly I hate that word! Love your supporting photos which I have viewed just for research lol….. X X X

Love the quotes and love this activity! I’m a firm believer that beauty is all about perception. My definition of beauty is different than others, but one thing rings true, as you pointed out here: it’s almost always never about looks. Sure, it can be an aspect of it, but there’s more to a beautiful person than how they look. There’s heart and mind to consider. There’s attitude and outlook. Those bear more weight in beauty if you ask me. Thanks for sharing this with us on #shinebloghop this week!

Hello Maria! I actually have a similar definition of beauty. Kindness, respect, consideration, love reflects outwardly and makes a person beautiful. Thank you! Feel free to join in Writers Quote Wednesday any time! It was a pleasure sharing at Shine Blog Hop! 😀

Stellar post Vashti. Indeed beauty comes from within. The most beautiful face once exposing an ugly soul no longer can retain admiration. 🙂 ❤

I’ve long observed that if someone has a pleasing personality, they instantly become more attractive, and the opposite is also true as you pointed out. Beauty truly is in the eyes of the beholder, and one can also say, ‘love is blind’ 😉

I completely agree! For the longest time I have had a huge crush on Mr. Richard Gere, but many of my friends did not or do not share the same sentiment. I’ve heard, “But, Dean, he’s old.” To that I say like fine wine… although I’m not a wine drinker. 😀

I totally get it. My celebrity crushes change from month to month but I’ve had crushes on Sean Connery (he’s up there), Jamie Foxx, Pierce Brosnan, and Jeffrey Dean. 😉 Fine wine aged to perfection. Ha, ha! 😀 xx

    Hi Vashti –

“To a mom her baby is the most beautiful creature alive, to a stranger the same infant may look like Winston Churchill or Mr. Magoo.” LOL – that is so funny and so true!

Seriously, though, this is such an important topic, and I appreciate you sharing it with the Let’s Get Real party. I wish more women could understand this, that their beauty is in the entire “package” of who they are, not just what they see when they look in a mirror (and understanding that they are “seeing” with very critical eyes). This will be my featured post at this week’s party.

Hello Gaye! I’m so excited to be featured at this week’s party! Thank you very much. As women we are under a lot of pressure by the media, society, men, and sometimes our own family to be ‘beautiful’. What women and men need to understand is that, like you pointed out, beauty is an entire package and it takes more than just a pretty face to be beautiful. Thanks again, my friend. ❤ xx
