Hello everyone! Happy National Endangered Species Day!

If you know me or have been following ‘The Writer Next Door’ blog for a while, then you know that I love animals. I’m sure most people are fond of animals and have had one or more pets at some point in their lives. But whether or not you have a pet makes no difference really. A life is a life and should be respected. At least that’s my opinion and everyone’s entitled to one.

Each year on the third Friday in May, National Endangered Species Day is an opportunity for everyone to learn about the importance of protecting endangered species, their habitats and the actions necessary to do so.

Every year you can participate along with thousands of others at events to celebrate National Endangered Species Day at wildlife refuges, zoos, parks, community centers, aquariums, botanical gardens, libraries and schools.

There are many more animals on the endangered list. I can’t show them all. 😦 Wouldn’t it be sad if your children or grandchildren grew up without ever seeing these beautiful animals? It breaks my heart to think that many of these animals may be extinct by the time my nieces and nephews have children.

An amazing field

Full not of wild animals

but earth stained in blood

The price of karma is high

For silent roars and dust-wings

Bald Eagle – I had the privilege of seeing a couple of Bald Eagles in Alaska. They are awe-inspiring birds.

      Hello! Yes, they are bittersweet for me. The pictures are beautiful and moving but they also remind me that these animals could be extinct in a few years if nothing is done. Thank you! ❤

    Such an important issue you write about Vashti and a very inspiring haiku to confront the reality of human destruction of the natural world. Sadly Australia has a shocking track record in extinction of indigenous fauna. I belong to local and national groups and work to protect, protest and educate. Our stupid politicians are so ignorant in the face of power and greed. Our fauna can teach us everything about survival.

    Hi Vashti. I share your concern for the planet’s children. Powerful haiku…”for silent roars and dust-wings”. I recently heard about what researchers found on Henderson Is. in the South Pacific.         I heard an interview with one of the researchers and they actually categorized some of the debris found on this uninhabited island, based on markings related to countries of origin. It seems to be coming from worldwide locations, even Japan.

        So it’s basically the world’s dump. Wow, sad. We have to try to use less plastic and what we do use should be recycled. Otherwise, we’re going to have more islands like this. 😦
