Maya Angelou is a poet I admire greatly. I love her quote:

 

“I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

 

That quote is one of my favorites because it’s so true. There are people I will always remember fondly. I may not remember every word uttered between us but I do remember the good feelings they brought out in me. Sometimes people underestimate the power of a kind word or gesture. But I know it could change someone’s life. I am so grateful for all the kindness shown to me during this difficult time.

I had a huge setback. I had a couple of days where I felt some improvement in my recovery after my hysterectomy surgery and then things began to go downhill. I’ve always recovered quickly from illnesses and past surgeries and I had no reason to believe that things would be different with this surgery. But around day 3 my pain level increased and I began getting fevers.

I couldn’t eat or sleep and became very lethargic. I called the surgeon’s office but they kept assuring me that everything I was going through was normal. I know my body and I knew I should have been seeing at least a little improvement everyday but instead, I was deteriorating quickly. Finally, after my husband placed a few more calls, because I was too weak to do it myself at this point, we were told to come to the office.

I went in to the office and when they saw the state I was in they sent me to the emergency room. After several tests in the ER a Cat-scan revealed that I had three abscesses growing in the area of the surgery and I was admitted to the hospital. The surgeon had found bowel adhesions attached to my pelvic cavity wall and repaired them, but in the process he accidentally introduced bacteria into my system. The abscesses were drained the following evening because my potassium was very low and they couldn’t sedate me until my potassium level was back to normal. The reason my potassium level was low in the first place was because I hadn’t been eating or drinking since the surgery. Between the pain, nausea and lethargy I couldn’t eat. After the abscesses were drained (a painful procedure) I felt some relief. I was discharged from the hospital yesterday and I feel that things are finally going in the right direction. I was discharged with the drain attached, so a nurse will come over to my house to help me with that.

But it isn’t all gloom. The silver lining is that the surgeon told me that the pathology from the surgery showed that although the cancer was in the uterus the lymph nodes were not compromised, so by taking everything out I’m cleared of the cancer. Yay! I feel the worst is behind me and I’m looking forward to enjoying the holidays.

I want to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for all the prayers, good vibes, sweet comments and healing thoughts. This is the first day I’ve felt up to getting on the computer, I apologize for that, but my husband has been reading the comments to me and I couldn’t be more touched or more grateful. I appreciate each and every one of you. I will begin “Poetry Friday” again next Friday.

      Hi Jacquie. It is a bit frustrating when doctors don’t listen to their patients. That’s why I tell people to pay attention to what their bodies are telling them and to be assertive with their medical care. In the hospital I was told that had I waited longer I could have gotten a blood infection. I’m glad it didn’t come to that and the news of being cancer free is the best Christmas gift I can get.       I tell my family and friends that they must be assertive with their healthcare. Had I waited any longer I could have gotten sepsis (an infection in the blood). That was the hospital doctor’s biggest concern. Thank you for the prayers, Jill. Have a great holiday season!

        Thanks, Vashti! It’s kind of a worrisome surgery for me and I’ll be unable to drive or do much of anything for a while afterwards. I’m hoping I can at least sit at my desk and do my writing and blogs or I’ll be bored to death. I was supposed to have it this week but a changed apt. puts me figuring it’ll be next month sometime. I’m the driver in my family and it’s going to be tough for a while but it has to be done.

        Thanks, Vashti! That means a lot! I kind of feel a bit selfish doing the surgery with so much going on in my life but then I hit myself in one of the areas of my pain yesterday and it felt like someone stabbed me. I literally couldn’t MOVE for a long time afterward. I figure if I can face the four shots I have to take each month in these areas, I can do the surgery!

    Oh Vashti, I felt something was off. Last I read from you was the day after your surgery when you were having a tough time trying to walk and I told you to get back into bed. I mean who the heck feels like walking 24 hours after having half your stomach removed? How awful what you went through after going through such a difficult surgery. You are a trooper my friend and I’m still sending you light. I’m thrilled to see you pop by and let us know how you’re doing. Rock on warrior woman! ❀ xx

      Ha, ha. I didn’t have half my stomach taken out! You’re too cute. I had a Total Abdominal hysterectomy and bowel adhesions repair. What complicated everything was that the surgeon accidentally introduced bacteria from the intestines into the surgery site when he was repairing the adhesions which gave me a major infection. It was rough for a while but I finally feel like I’m on the mend. My stomach is intact though.😘

    Hi Vashti, Sorry to hear what you had gone through. Yes, you know your own body and could sense what is normal and what is not. When the doctor found bowel adhesion attached to my pelvic cavity wall, did he have to cut you open to repair it? Ouch!

    Too bad that the doctors are not serious about your concern and said it was normal. I also had to be my own advocate to a point that I sat in the doctor’s office until someone took me seriously and referred me to the supervisor of the case managers.

    A friend who is a retired nurse had back surgery and the surgeon nicked the bowl, she had infection and caused high fever for a long time. Her nurse friend saw the bruise on the side of her abdominal and was suspicious. The long story short – she was in extended care for months and almost died.

    When I was in cancer treatment, one cycle was postponed due to low potassium.

    Good to hear that you feel better and on the road to recovery.

    Colleen is taking a 3-week break from poetry challenge but the prompts are there. She just won’t do recaps during those three weeks. Please do post your poetry.

    I have been busy with the Christmas Messiah and other concert performances. I’ll spend one week in Portland, Oregon with my daughter’s family for Christmas. Then we’ll all travel, as I mentioned before that, to Hong Kong and Japan, leaving on January 10,2019.

    I’ll hop into the blogs and social medias every now and then but may not be active in blogging for several weeks.

    Pray that you’ll be on your normal way of recovery and good thing that your husband takes good care of you.

      Wow! I’m glad you stood strong at the doctor’s office. I think less mistakes would happen in the medical field if more doctors just listened to their patients. Yes, the surgeon had to detach part of my colon from my uterus and then some of the intestines from my pelvic cavity. In the process he introduced bacteria into the surgery site.     Vashti, I saw on the comments from your last post that you hadn’t been well but had no idea you’ve gone through such an ordeal. I’m happy you’re recovering but this has been a hugely traumatic time for you … give yourself a chance to fully mend. Good news ultimately which must come as an almost unbelievable relief.       Hello Annika. I’m taking it one day at a time. My pain is almost gone, I just feel tired a lot, but the doctor says that’s understandable considering everything my body has gone through and the fact that I’m still recuperating. I feel better everyday, and the news of being cancer free is amazing. I can’t complain. Thank you for the love, hugs, and well wishes. ❀ xo

    It is always difficult when someone in our community that we are in contact regularly is going through a tough time. Vasti Quiroz-Vega has just undergone major surgery and all we could do was offer encouragement and send best wishes. Thankfully after a setback, she is well on the road to recovery.     A reminder to us all that if things don’t feel right they probably aren’t; we need physical and moral support to insist on attention from the medics. Doctors are only human and they do make mistakes.

    Sorry you’ve had such a rough time but delighted the tests results show you are cancer free. I hope you will be able to start eating and to feel better soon.

      Hello Mary. It has been rough, but I’m grateful to be cancer free. I’m still on antibiotics which my stomach doesn’t appreciate, so my appetite isn’t great right now. On the bright side, I tend to overeat during the holidays, so . . . maybe it’s not such a bad thing. Ha, ha. Kidding! I am feeling better everyday and that’s the important thing. Thank you for the well wishes. ❀

    I am so sorry, Vashti, to read of your post operative problems. I think the doctor’s rooms were a bit slack. My sister suffers from diverticulitis so I know that bacteria can be very dangerous and make you horribly ill. I am very glad to know you are on the mend now. Have a blessed and happy Christmas.
