Hello, everyone! Thanks for stopping by!
Can people really change? Is there an age limit? Can a person be too old to become their best self?
I understand we’re all born with certain characteristics and traits inherited from our parents and other family members but aren’t our personalities also molded by how we grew up? Our environment? Our education?
I woke up this morning thinking about this; can a person after years of being a certain way suddenly change? Or is it too late for some?
I believe personality can change, especially over time. Using myself as an example, I know I’ve become more responsible and emotionally stable as I’ve gotten older. In addition, events in my life have caused changes in my attitude and character traits. I’ve also made choices through the years to change certain aspects of my personality. Does that mean I’m a perfect saint? Absolutely not––but I’m working on it.
I also believe that adults can change their character, no matter their age if they see that the present way they conduct themselves holds them back or causes them losses or harm. Your personality isn’t hardwired or a matter of genetics. I sense that our human nature is complex, yet capable of growth. You may differ in opinion and that’s okay.
So, what is the (my) bottom line? Unless you have a genuine personality disorder you can change and even those people with personality disorders can change if they seek treatment.
So there you have it. Whatever you believe there’s no excuse for being unkind or intolerant––you can change your behavior and way of thinking and be the best version of yourself.
Today I wrote two Cinquain poems. I hope you enjoy.
BEFORE . . .
Before
I was someone
I didn’t want to be
I was sad, lost, and invisible
I changed
◊
Before
I became strong
I knew what it was like
to be weak and undeserving
I changed
Kind and Shift are this week’s prompt words chosen by Colleen Chesebro ~ The Fairy Whisperer.
*The catch is that we can only use the synonyms to these words in our poems.
Colleen hosts a challenge that anyone could participate in called, Colleen’s Weekly Tanka Tuesday Poetry Challenge every Tuesday, and you have until Sunday to create a post featuring your Haiku, Tanka, Haibun, Etheree or Cinquain poem. She is an author and poet, and also does book reviews and so much more on her blog. Be sure to check it out.

We are always changing and learning. Each day we become a better person by choice:) Great point and poem, Vashti! Hope your weekend is the best one ever.

Hi, Denise! I certainly agree with you but not everyone thinks so. Thank you! I wish the same for you. ❤

I think adults who are introspective and want to improve some aspect of their personality can change with desire and hard work, especially hard work because ways of acting get so ingrained. Nice poems.:-)

What a delightful commentary, Vashti, to accompany your cinquain poems. I think you are right. But, the person must want to facilitate change. Some change is inevitable I think because we grow from our experiences which develop into wisdom. As we age, this introspection helps us to change our views. Yet, others refuse to change, happy to wallow in their own dogma. ❤

You’re right, Colleen. If a person doesn’t want to change there’s nothing anyone can do. You’re also right about some changes being inevitable due to your circumstances. Thank you, sis! ❤ xo

I don’t think there is a perfect answer to this one. We can change with dedication and effort. How much of that is ingrained genetically, we’ll probably never know. Most people don’t change, but it is possible.

I think you’re right about the possibility that some things may be ingrained in us genetically but I don’t think this includes your whole personality. I believe most people can change it’s just harder for some. Thanks for your comment, my friend. 😀

I heard a simple expression many years ago, and I’ve acknowledged the pure sense and simplicity of it for decades. It went like this … “If you always do what you have always done, then, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.” I repeat it to myself often. I love the self-understanding you’ve expressed in this poem.

Thanks for your insightful comment and for sharing this quote. It’s so true! If we don’t take risks and try different things we’ll grow stagnant. I’m happy you enjoyed the Cinquain. 🙂 xo

I agree with you. People can change and I don’t think there’s an age limit. It’s a matter of deciding to behave differently. That changing behavior can change a person’s psychology. If I behave courageously, I become courageous.

Great thinking and reflection, Vashti. Yes, a certain percentage of personality and characters are born with and passed on to us from our parents and grandparents. Certain characteristics could skip generations. But mostly, we’ve become who we are through education and environment.
We still can change in older age. I met two ladies in their early 70s. They had strong personalities, but they said they learned to listen to their grown children in the last two years and changed certain habits.

Thank you for your wise comment, Miriam. Yes, I agree that our environment and education does influence our behavior. Thanks for sharing about the two ladies you met. That’s wonderful to know. ❤

Thank you, Vashti. I think it’s important for the kids to learn to make changes. I realized that an open-minded person can make changes into his/her old age but others can change even when they are young. ❤

If we could not change ourselves, what a sad world it would be. I often think about the three C’s quote: “You must make a choice to take a chance, or your life will never change.” Loved your post and poem.

Great quote, Karen! Thanks for sharing it. I agree, what would life be like if we couldn’t change ourselves? Yet, some people sadly believe that they cannot change. I’m happy you enjoyed the post! Thank you! ❤

Loved your message, loved the delivery, and the artwork. I think yes and no to the question. Yes we can change our ways, our minds, our personalities, but I think it’s very difficult to change one’s nature or temperment, even morals, so I have to stick with a saying I have a bad habit of saying when faced with a repetitive scenario with some people – You can’t change the spots on a leopard. ❤

Yes, some things are ingrained into our very being and can be extremely difficult to change. After a certain age, some people don’t care to change. They figure, they’ve put up with me this long, why change now? ❤

I definitely think people can change if they desire to do so, Vashti. I also believe it is impossible to force someone to change if they are not willing. As Denise said, we are always growing and learning and therefore morphing into someone different and (hopefully) better. Great poem! Have a great weekend!

Lovely poem and message, Vashti! I think the more we embrace this exquisite journey of life our desire to live an authentic life, one that enriches the mind, body, and soul becomes prominent and aligned with intrinsic value, rather than external means. This is my experience. Thanks for sharing another gem with us. Happy Sunday! XO
