Poetry Friday ~ Calling All Weirdos!

11 Oct

Hi, everyone! Welcome.

What does it mean when someone calls you a weirdo?

If you describe someone as a weirdo, you disapprove of them because they behave in an unusual way that you find difficult to understand or accept.

Well, some people may feel that way, but this is not my definition of a weirdo. In this day and age, it’s weird for someone to be their genuine self. It’s strange to speak your mind, regardless of others’ opinions. In these times, when so many people pop pills in order not to feel, it’s strange for someone to wear his or her emotions on their sleeve. I like weirdos. They’re my kind of people, honest, open, free thinkers. They don’t fear to be unique. They think outside the box and go with their creative flow.

It’s refreshing to be with people who are not numb to the world around them but instead embrace every emotion that makes them human.

Sometimes I’m surrounded by so much apathy and hate that it becomes unbearable. Why are there so many desensitized people? Stop popping pills every time you’re in danger of feeling something. Be a weirdo and feel. It’s normal to be sad when you lose a loved one. It’s okay to feel angry, scared, unsure, insecure sometimes. Deal with it because that’s what makes you human.

I understand that there are people who genuinely need to be on medication, but there are too many folks out there taking medications they shouldn’t be, and this has a dehumanizing effect.

I’m tired of being in the presence of cyborgs. I want to be around real people. Being a genuine person comes with a price, though. Not everyone will like you, but then not everyone should matter to you. Calling all weirdos!

Empty and Space are this week’s prompt words chosen by Colleen Chesebro ~ The Fairy Whisperer.

*The catch is that we can only use the synonyms to these words in our poems.

Colleen hosts a challenge that anyone could participate in called, Colleen’s Weekly Tanka Tuesday Poetry Challenge every Tuesday, and you have until Sunday to create a post featuring your Haiku, Tanka, Haibun, Etheree or Cinquain poem. She is an author and poet, and also does book reviews and so much more on her blog. Be sure to check it out.

Here’s my contribution to Colleen’s Weekly Poetry Challenge. The Poetry form is an Etheree.

There’s
no where
to suffer
in this dark place.
Oh, my vacant life
there’s no happy surprise.
I pop a pill the moment
I realize that I’m alive.
Then I’m hollow, no feelings inside.
There’s only this disguise of constant lies.

I liked this, Vashti. Many medical conditions are caused by taking medication. I’m down to one med for my lymphedemic leg.

Have a wonderful weekend, my friend. ❤

Hi, Miriam! I understand that some people need to take medicine for pain, anxiety, depression . . . That being said, I also know that many people abuse these drugs and walk around overmedicated––like zombies––not feeling a thing. Abusing these medications take away your humanity.

You have a lovely weekend too, my friend! ❤ xo

I took Lorazepam for sleep for years. By the time I wanted to stop, I couldn’t because the drug is having forming, a nice way to say additive. It took me 2 years to very slowly wean off.😊

I’m happy about that also, thank you, Vashti. It was a tough one to get rid of, from talking to people who took it. 🙂

    PRETTY BALLERINA

    Stop!
    Open!
    Stop hiding
    Your darker side.
    Face the light of truth.
Your life is but a dream
    In which you’re fully vacant
Distracted and far from this place.
    Caught in the spotlight spin round and round;
    Ravenous pirouette seeking applause.

“I like weirdos!” “Be a weirdo and feel.” Wonderful post! The world is crazy conforming, Vashti! Weirdos may be the only ones keeping it real!

I agree entirely, Linda. Being a weirdo means being an individual, which isn’t always popular, but hey, I prefer to surround myself with authentic people. I’m happy you stopped by my friend. Have a great week! ❤

You actually think people need to think and feel and reflect and be themselves and all of that? What a weirdo… 😉 Great post, Vashti! And great poem to go along with the text.

Yep, I am a self-proclaimed “weirdo”, particularly if being a weirdo means thinking, feeling, etc. 🙂 (I like to think of myself more as unique or different, but I will take whatever label fits your post.)

Thank you for sharing such lovely thoughts Vashti. If being honest, open and emotional is counted as being weirdo, I have no qualms with this term! There was a time when free thinking was suppressed, no longer so. Natural instincts need to be respected.

As usual, I agree with you, Balroop. If we cannot express ourselves artistically or in everyday life, we’ll just become a society of robots. We can’t have that. Thank you for your wise and insightful words, my friend. ❤

I’m 100% with you on this, Vashti! I am constantly telling my students to have the courage to let go of the masks they wear to fit in with the people around them and just be true to who they are. I know it’s a scary thing, but it is so freeing! Here’s to the genuine people out there! Weirdos unite! 😉

Weirdos unite! Ha, ha! I’m glad that there are teachers like you out there that teach children that they can be themselves. If there were more teachers like you, maybe there would be less teen depression and suicide. No one’s happy faking their life.

Too many people use substances to numb themselves. This is not to be confused with people who take psychotropic medications to compensate for neurological deficits. I hope that on my best days I’m the best kind of weirdo. 🙂
