Welcome, everyone! This week is ‘Poet’s Choice’ on Colleen’s 2020 Weekly Poetry Challenge. Poets can choose their own syllabic poetry form, theme, words, images, etc. I’ve chosen to share a witchy Etheree poem and a couple of quotes today.

“Isn’t it odd how much fatter a book gets when you’ve read it several times? As if something were left between the pages every time you read it. Feelings, thoughts, sounds, smells and then, when you look at the book again many years later, you find yourself there too, a slightly younger self, slightly different, as if the book had preserved you like a pressed flower, both strange and familiar.”

Resurrection

She had a mother that didn’t love her

that lied to her about her true worth

that singe her eyebrows with her sneers

taught her nothing of true love

so she dreamt of evil

writing purged the gloom

books gave her joy

nature taught

her to

love

“Do not let anyone tell you the next few months won’t be crazy. We have two full moons in October. An Eclipse in November. An Eclipse in December, and we close the year with a full moon December 29, 2020. This is wild card energy.”

    So many people can relate to your poem. It’s a beautiful expression of a difficult topic.

      Thank you, Priscilla. Although it’s not my reality, I know several people who did suffer this, so this poem is for them. Books, poetry, writing, drawing––the arts in general can change people and save lives. 🙂

    Lot’s to think about here, Vashti. Keeping oneself in a book is a fascinating concept. I used to keep all the books I read on various shelves. Pretty soon I ran out of space and so I stored them in what I thought was a safe place. A flood came and took them all. (Some of me with them.)

      Oh, John. Thanks for sharing this! I used to do the same thing. My room was filled with books. It is still very difficult for me to get rid of a book, especially one I loved and read more than once. ❤

    I think your poem is a reality for many. I’m always impressed with the graphics you use. I’m obviously a visual person.

      Hi, Craig. You’re right about that. Thank you. I’m a visual person too. I get the images from different places. I’m a member of DeviantArt. I also know some photographers and artists that allow me to use their work. I use unsplash sometimes too. The second image from the top is my own. I gathered some things I had around the house and took a picture of my current read ‘The Night Circus’ for Instagram. Whenever I could use one of my photos or drawings I try to do that. 😀

    I, too, have a storage bin (or two) filled with books I cannot part with for they hold a piece of me within them. I kept them hoping to share them with a future daughter. My son turned out to enjoy a different genre from the one I loved as a child. So, now I hold onto them to share with a future grand-daughter. Or at least, that’s my excuse. 😉

      Ha, ha. I’ve shared some of my books with my nieces and nephews and a couple of friends. There are a few books I’ve read several times already. Now, with all the books I have laying around the house and in my Kindle I just hope I have enough time on Earth to get to them all. I wish I was like some people who can read several books at a time and finish 4 books over a weekend. I don’t know how they do that. 🙂

    I love that first quote Vashti…we do leave a lot inside the books we read.
    Your poem is powerful, I have never tried this form of poetry, it sounds easy?

      I think it would be very easy for you, Balroop. An etheree is a syllabic poem of ten lines. Each line should have the equivalent amount of syllables. Line one – one syllable, line two – two syllables . . . . This one is reversed. I’m sure you can write a magnificent etheree. Enjoy the rest of the week.

      Let’s see what the future holds. These are very uncertain times and those that suffer from anxiety and drepression are the most vulnerable. We need to check on our family and friends often and stay strong and positive. Hugs & kisses ❤ xo

    Wow! Vashti, your poem stirred a lot of emotions. I have always thought of books as my friends and when I had to give away or sell most of them when we downsized, it broke my heart. I have kept a few of my favorites.
