Hello! My name is Vashti Quiroz-Vega. I know, my name is a mouthful, but if you can learn Arnold Schwarzenegger, Saoirse Ronan, Charlize Theron, M. Night Shyamalan, Jean Claude Van Damme, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau––mine will be a snap. JUST KIDDING!

I share quite a bit about myself on this page (maybe too much?), I don’t know. I’m an open book (no pun intended) to the dismay of some of my friends. Pretty much what you see is what you get with me. I have been told that I have a bizarre sense of humor, a funny laugh and a raspy voice (you’ll hear for yourself when I post vlogs). I apologize in advance. Ha,ha! I hope you enjoy the info..

I blog about my writer’s life and experiences I’ve had. I write fantasy, suspense and horror short stories, articles about current events, social media, writing, anything and everything, and poetry which I share on Fridays (Haiku Friday). I also feature authors, bloggers, poets, artists and other creative types on my blog.

Why is my blog called ‘The Writer Next Door‘? I consider myself a people person and someone who’s very approachable. I try to see the good in people. I’m not easily influenced and I hate malicious gossip. I believe in ‘girl power’ and sisterhood between women, but I also respect and admire men. I’m not scary, although I can be a little weird at times. I’m a kid at heart and love to have fun, but I also take my responsibilities very seriously and work hard to achieve my goals.

Since I was a kid I’ve always had a passion for writing. I’ve always been a writer I just didn’t know it until later. It has always been easier for me to express my thoughts on paper .

I love to read almost as much as I love to write. Some of my favorite authors are Stephen King, Michael Crichton, Anne Rice, J.R.R. Tolkien, J.K. Rowling and Dan Brown.

I enjoy making people feel an array of emotions with my writing. I like my audience to laugh one moment, cry the next and clench their jaws after that.

I love animals and nature and I enjoy incorporating them in my stories. You’ll read intriguing things about animals, nature and natural disasters in my character driven novel, The Fall of Lilith.

In my third novel “Dracul”, which follows “The Fall of Lilith” in my Fantasy Angels Series,  my  main character will be moving through time witnessing amazing and eerie historical moments unfold before him as he searches for his mother to exact revenge for attempting to kill him and leaving him for dead in the woods.

My novel “The Basement” is a MG suspense/thriller. It is currently available only in paperback due to the publisher going out of business (long story). The Basement will be relaunched later this year (2017) and will then be available in eBook and paperback.

You can read excerpts from my novel and works-in-progress on the Excerpts page. Please take a look and let me know what you think. Ultimately, the reader is what brings the author’s stories and words to life, and your feedback is important to me.

The unread story is not a story; it is little black marks on wood pulp. The reader, reading it, makes it live: a live thing, a story”

~Ursula K. Le Guin

10 Facts About Me

1. I sleep walk. (No, none of my writing has been done while asleep)

2. I love to travel. I’ve been to Spain, Greece, Italy, Africa, Croatia, Alaska, Jamaica, Puerto Rico and many other Caribbean Islands among other places. There are still many countries I long to visit.

3. I have an adventurer’s spirit. I have zipped lined off a 1000 ft ledge onto a beach in Haiti, river raft in Costa Rica, did some cave tubing in Belize (saw huge bats), snorkeled in near freezing water in Alaska (I was covered from head to toe in a dry suit of course)…

4. I love to cook and bake. (I made all the hors d’oeuvres, cocktails and desserts for my novel “The Basement” Pre-Release Party).

5. When I was a kid I wanted to be a superhero. When I was a teen I wanted to be a missionary and travel to exotic places to teach kids about God and how to read and write.

6. Although writing is my passion I do have a day job in the medical field. I’m a Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer. I perform Abdominal, OB/GYN and Vascular ultrasound exams.

7. I can predict how almost any movie will end by the first quarter of the movie. People have tested me on this.  ;D Some of my favorite movies are the ones I couldn’t predict.

8. I had an imaginary friend as a child.

Why can’t I comment on other posts, and only here? I wanted to know if your “bully” post is an original, or a re-blog… as I have read the same thing on Facebook!

  2. Vashti Quiroz-Vega April 5, 2013 at 3:21 am #

Hi Lorraine! You should be able to post wherever you want. There are comments from people on several posts. I have many posts about bullying. If you’re referring to “Superhero”, it’s an original post. I found the poem I used on “Message to Bullies” on Google+ and it touched me so much I wanted to share it. It’s by an anonymous writer.

Hi there. Your name is so unusual- what are it’s origins if you don’t mind me asking?

Hi Vashti: I came here via FWG “show me your website.” I’m a writer too, and liked your blog’s structure. It’s visually appealing and well organized, and seems to be getting people to read The Basement. My blog, xenoseye.wordpress.com isa companion blog to my e-novel. “the shadow of Xeno’s eye” which retells the Trojan War saga as an allegory to the American invasion of Iraq. Please take a look at it and tell me what you think. Suggestions and constructive criticisms are always welcome.

Congrats on your novel! You have a talent!

  21. Lana, The Little Bitty Farmer May 26, 2013 at 2:11 am #

I think we have a lot in common! I love Tolkien and Rowling, LOVE animals, I work in the medical field, and I also love to write. In fact, in high school I wrote a three-art fantasy novel that, in my wildest dreams, will one day be published. Congrats on your book, and it is great to meet up with you! Perhaps you can inspire me to dust off my old story and see what I can do with it once again. 🙂

    • Vashti Quiroz-Vega May 26, 2013 at 10:32 pm #

Hi Lana! Are you sure we’re not long-lost sisters? Ha, ha! Let me tell you how “The Basement” was born. I was doing some Spring cleaning and found a box with a bunch of short stories I had written in High school. I had won an award for “The Basement” and so I read it aloud to my husband. My husband loved it and encouraged me to expand the story into a novel. That’s how “The Basement” came to be. You need to do the same with your story! Just write. It won’t be perfect at first (it never is), but every time you go over it, it will get better. Remember, the book is not going to write itself. You have to make the time and do it. It is so nice to meet you. Thank you so much for your comment. I hope to hear from you again. 😀

  22. coastalmom May 26, 2013 at 8:44 pm #

Stopping by from #SSS! I love your list of ten – I sometimes wonder why some people sleep walk and others don’t. To my knowledge I never have, but my brother always did?! Interesting.

I think laughter really can be the best medicine. I love to laugh and can be heard several feet down from my office door.. Some may find it annoying, I hope it’s contagious. 🙂

Hope you have a good week!

    • Vashti Quiroz-Vega September 16, 2013 at 3:48 pm #

Hi Kate! I’m glad you enjoyed the page. I often wonder the same thing. Seeing the funny side of situations has often helped me through it, and there’s always a funny side. I love to hear people laugh wholeheartedly, and it is contagious to me. Have a wonderful week and I’ll be seeing you around.

      All the best! 😀
