The Basement has been incorporated in several libraries and schools. Within this entertaining and frightening tale is a good lesson to be learned.

The Basement
by Vashti Quiroz-Vega
“A kid shouldn’t be aware of his own heartbeat.”
Never forget the unexplored territories in your own back yard, or under your house. Here, Vashti Quiroz-Vega gives voice to the young inhabitants of one neighborhood where things are more than they seem.
Robbie is an ordinary boy in a normal world, as we first enter the neighborhood and witness an idyllic scene of prepubescent children at play; but what happens in silence and in the dark will amaze you. Join Robbie as he journeys to explore unknown and forgotten tales of intrigue, fear and blind faith.
Ask yourself:
What kinds of monsters lurk in your world?
What will you do when you can no longer see?
Robbie is a meek boy in New York City who struggles with the desire to prove himself to his friends, his enemies, and himself. Robbie’s father is a stubborn man determined to teach his son through tough love. When he witnesses Robbie being bullied, he forces his son to face his fears. Robbie is sentenced to a frightening challenge––staying in the basement alone for a night. But what lies in the dark recesses of the basement? Will Robbie make it out alive and well? Will the urban legend about the terrifying creatures that hide in the dark basement prove to be true? And most importantly, will Robbie prove to his friends and his father that he is brave enough to take on the challenge? The Basement is a tale of angst, teamwork and solutions, treasure hunts and adventure, and facing fears. It focuses on the small world of one group of preteens and the very real and wondrous challenges they face.

**THE BASEMENT is available in paperback only due to the publisher going out of business. It will be relaunched later this year (2017) and will then be available in ebook and paperback.

Sounds like a spooky read! My kids would probably love it—once they’re old enough to read a full-size book. It’s cool how most kids are drawn to spooky stuff, even when deep down they’re still afraid of the dark. Like moths drawn to a flame!
