Haiku Friday – River & Stone

Haiku Friday-The Writer Next Door-Vashti Q-Poetry-poem

River and Stone are this week’s prompt words chosen by Ronovan Hester of Ronovan Writes.

Ron hosts a challenge that anyone could participate in called Ronovan Writes Weekly Haiku Poetry Prompt Challenge every Monday, and you have until Sunday to create a post featuring your haiku poem. He is an author and poet and also does author interviews and much more on his blog. Be sure to check it out. Read Ron’s Haiku Prompt Challenge Guidelines for more information.

I ran across this wonderful poem and I was touched by it, so I wanted to share it here today. I was astonished when I discovered that it was written by a 17 year old girl. This poet is deep and insightful beyond her years.

River Stones

by Danii Spinelli Phantomm

On each persons path, there are stones-
Do you cast yours at others because you are looking behind you?,
Do you stumble over them and fall because you are looking so far into the distance?
Or- Do you use them as the stepping stones they are in that moment to better safely guide yourself because you are walking in the here and the now?

Those that throw may be lead to their own glass house.
Those that stumble may fall into a hole…
But those that see, that trust, that walk- they are on their way…
By one step, one stone, one moment at a time,
They are going somewhere

A lonely leaf jumped

To a creek of a river

Lured by gleaming stones

Where the water floats by

Now a touch of crimson drifts

Wow, doubt I had the chops to express myself so eloquently when I was her age, brava! And YOU… the imagery and feeling of your haiku, transported me to a river bank as though I were a leaf. Job well done. 🙂

At 17 I definitely did not have the ‘chops’. I could tell you that with certainty. I am very impressed by Danii.
Aww, thank you so much for the kind words. You always say the sweetest things. ❤ xx

Nice. I like both poems, even if one doesn’t fit the format (I won’t tell!).

Ah, ha, ha! Neither of them do. Mine is a Tanka. Should I rename the post, ‘Poetry Friday’? Nah, it doesn’t have the same ring to it. 😉

You’re right about the young poet. I love yours too. It reminds me of early Ezra Pound. Have a lovely weekend, Vashti.

A beautiful collection of poetry and images Vashti. Your poem captures all the essence of early Autumn. The girls poem is wonderful, young poets can blossom at any age. I taught English to junior secondary classes and read some incredible poetry by my students.

The poem is beautiful. At 17, I definitely did not express myself so eloquently. All my poems were dark and well teen-ish.

Neither did I. I can totally relate. Some of my poems are still dark and angsty. Ha, ha. Thank you! 🙂

The 17 year old is a very wise person. It’s interesting that if we travel back and truly remember, the past can enlighten our present moments and future. Wonderful images accentuating the meaning of the words. ❤

Loved the way it metaphorically speaks. Pretty much covered varied realms with little river stones. Lovely!

    WOW!! She’s only seventeen? Seventeen?
I do not think I was that deep at her age.
Thank you for sharing, I have to show this poem to my daughter when she gets home.
    XOXO
